What are the health benefits of being vegetarian or vegan?
Q. I know there are lots of reasons to cut meat out of your diet. The one I personally find the most reasonable is for your health. I have met several people who have become vegetarian or vegan for "health reasons". So I'm wondering, what are these health benefits? Is meat not healthy? Why does cutting meat from your diet make you a healthier person?
Asked by Lydia - Thu Jan 29 16:25:55 2009 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Just because someone says they are vegetarian or vegan doesn't necessarily mean that they are healthier. It depends on the protein sources they are eating in place of meat. You can do it right, but most people dont, and I have found that veg eat way too much sugar. Key reasons: benefit to the planet, it takes a lot less resources to grow vegetables for food consumption than it takes to grow cows (also responsible for disappearing rain forests), plus, it doesn't support factory farming practices which are not only horribly cruel to animals in that they have horrible living conditions, but also, this type of farming is environmentally destructive. I was veg for about 6 years. Health benefits (if you do it right with nutrition focus), you… [cont.]

Asked by yagamimax - Mon Jun 7 18:11:11 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well the health benefits for a psychiatrist is what they buy themselves. Usually they are their own bosses so most of the time they have to pay for their own health care. If they were to work for somebody or a hospital then they may be offered benefits. Good luck! Hope I helped! Please mark as best answer if it is. Any other questions feel free to message me. Tyler

What are the health benefits of eating peanut butter?
Q. I'm looking for sources, excluding Wikipedia, that describe the health benefits of eating peanut butter. It would be nice if the facts were specific to crunchy peanut butter, but it isn't necessary. Peanut butter benefits compared to other popular foods would be awesome. Thanks!
Asked by Yates - Sat Oct 25 19:20:23 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. One of the most interesting and peculiar nutrients found in peanuts is Resveratrol: this is a natural antimicrobial agent, produced by the peanut plant (and in even larger quantities by red grapes) to ward off potential pathogens The minerals peanut butter contains are in variable amount (raw peanut butter with crushed skin contains much higher amounts than refined "nut-only" butter): iron is essential for the correct functioning of your red blood cells, while calcium promotes healthy bones and shields against muscle spasms. Although not among the richest foods in potassium, peanut butter still contains fairly good amounts of it, and research has indicated that diets rich in potassium reduce the risk of hypertension (bananas are, however,… [cont.]

Would like to apply for a CA state government job, but due to my family circumstances (I am the sole breadwinner in the family with a hubby and two small boys), need a decent health insurance benefits package that doesn't cost the earth!! Does anyone know what percentage they cover for the employee and for the employee's family? Q. I bought a box of the Stash green chai tea yesterday. My family was shocked because I can't stand tea of any kind. But I just drank my first mug of this a few minutes ago and it tastes wonderful! It actually sort of tastes a bit like the Mexican horchata. So I'm considering taking it up regularly instead of drinking Swiss Miss and Folgers. What are the health benefits of eating whole wheat bread vs. white?
Q. I am eating that kind of wheat bread, it is kind of sweet but really good. I am just wondering about the health benefits/differences between white bread and wheat bread. Looks like 100% whole wheat...We also bought other bread that has 7 whole wheats or something like that, my family has devoured that bag already :)
Asked by Silver Tipped Wings - Sat Jan 13 13:18:52 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The wheat bread that you are eating is probably sweet because of some complex additives, one of which would invariably be sugar. Also chemicals and preservatives are part of the mix to increase its shelf life. Still, it is certainly a healthier alternative to the white bread. The flour in white bread is white through finer grinding and sifting (not through bleaching) and in the process many phytonutrients are lost. The carbohydrates in the white bread are easily digested and almost immediately converted to blood sugar. That results in weight gain or hampers weight loss. In the wholegrain bread varieties the structure of the carbohydrates is more complex as less fiber and wheat germ has been lost in the milling process. As a result, your… [cont.]

What are the health benefits of chick peas?
Q. What are the health benefits of chick peas? I know a very healthy person who is always eating chick peas. What is so good about them?
Asked by LondonGuy - Tue Sep 11 08:44:07 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Some varieties of beans, notably chick peas, are rich in plant substances known as phytoestrogens which have an action similar to, though far weaker than, the hormone oestrogen in the body. Some scientists have speculated that consuming a diet rich in phytoestrogens may help protect against heart disease. Research suggests that one effect of phytoestrogens is to lower blood levels of the blood fats low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides that are linked with heart disease and stroke. One study, found that feeding rats with chick peas brought about significant reductions in the levels of both these forms of unhealthy fats. However, even beans that do not contain much in the way of phytoestrogens may have benefits on fat… [cont.]

A. Some people develop knee/foot problems with running. Walking is all-round healthier ( less brutal to the body) . But that means brisk walking not leisure walking.

Asked by lulu77 - Thu Jul 19 23:07:30 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just like any diet, you need balance and variety to stay healthy. A well planned plant-based diet can award many health benefits including lowered risks of cancer and cardiovascular disease. It is best to learn how to prepare everything needed for a healthy and satisfying diet before making a commitment. --- If you want to become a lacto-ovo vegetarian, the transition should be quite simple. Almost all meats have widely available commercial replacements. All that you have to do is replace any flesh in your diet (beef, pork, poultry, seafood) with meat analogs or just leave it out altogether. You should keep in mind that a journey such as this can be quite short but should just be the beginning of a longer one to a plant-based… [cont.]

What are the health benefits of consuming olive oil?
Q. Olive oil has a very high amount of fat. I read on the label of this oil that I have that is has 14 grams of fat per tablespoonfull! But from what I gather, this fat is actually good fat. Is that true? What kind is it? What are the health benefits of consuming olive oil? Is there a limit? How much is too much?
Asked by Savage serenity - Mon Jul 27 21:55:57 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Olive oil is a good type of fat. Its best to take 2 tbsp. daily. A few of the benefits it's known for are lowering bad cholesterol and blood pressure, protecting against colon, breast and skin cancers and reducing the incidence of gallstones. Olive oil is not hydrogenated oil. Hydrogenation creates dangerous trans-fats found in margarine and many other packaged foods.oleic acid (omega 9) makes up 55 - 85 percent of the fatty acids in olive oil. Studies have shown that people who consumed 25 milliliters(about 2 tbsp.) of virgin olive oil daily for 1 week showed less oxidation of LDL cholesterol and higher levels of antioxidant compounds, particularly phenols, in the blood. extra virgin olive oil, from the first pressing of the… [cont.]

What is the difference in health benefits between regular and organic/unfiltered apple cider vinegar?
Q. I have started drinking apple cider vinegar daily in order to increase my health and drop a couple of pounds but I bought filtered apple cider vinegar. I think it is walmart brand but that was all they had. I plan on going out to buy organic ACV after i finish this small bottle. Am I drinking this filtered ACV for nothing or does it still have the same health benefits as organic ACV?
Asked by BrittKJ - Sun Feb 1 10:08:22 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most ACV that is not organic is Apple Cider flavored vinegar and is not a true fermented product but rather the result of a industrial chemical process (just look at the label-all store brand and Heinz ACV are a mix of grain vinegar and AC flavoring) The organic Apple cider vinegars are produced through natural fermentation and use actual apple cider to make the vinegar. So yes, big differences between the two

We are humans not gods. You will live longer with less water each day. People die in the extreme, either too much or too little. Just be natural. Let go and let God.

What are the specific health benefits of owning a dog?
Q. Some guy wrote a letter to the editor complaining about people who pay so much attention to their dogs and spend money on them when there are charities that need help. Some people have written in to tell him that while they own dogs they also contribute to charities, etc and how dare he tell them what their hobbies should be. I'd like to write a short response of my own mentioning health benefits since no one has touched on that subject yet.

A. First I am not sure why some people have to speak out about every little thing. If dogs make people happy why should others question it? Sure charities need help but dogs also need homes and people need companionship. Everyone knows that dogs can lower people's blood pressure and also help to get them out and exercising (as long as they walk their dogs). Dogs also reduce the stress in the house, they are always happy to see you and greet you with love. Who couldn't use some of that affection? Other dogs are used in hospitals, nursing homes, etc. for therapy. They bring joy to sick people who would otherwise be alone. There are also working dogs who help those in need (blind, etc) or work on a farm herding sheep. There are a… [cont.]
