How can I explain to someone that eating fermented foods is moral?
Q. I have a friend who used to eat fermented foods before he became very militant about his vegan diet. He claims that their are tiny animals in his pickle jar? How can I convince him it is okay to eat fermented foods? I did tell him it is wrong to eat meat though an he knows that and we both agree on that. However, we don't agree on the fermented foods. Please help with some advice because he was judging me for eating pickles and that is not right. Eating pickles is okay. traceili, did you knock over your water bowl again?

A. The mighty moral Ashley is being judged by someone else. Why don't you tell him the cold hard truth and don't sugar coat it. Don't forget to juice your pickles.

A. If they've been sitting, they may be rotten. Rotten and fermented are not the same thing. If you are interested in making pineapple wine, get some fresh pineapples, and some wine yeast. There is also some special equipment you will need (fermenting vessel, airlock, hydrometer, etc.). Check out for more information on making wine, and check out or for equipment. Feel free to email me if you need more help, or have any further questions.

How does distillation increase the alcohol content of fermented liquids?
Q. How does distillation increase the alcohol content of fermented liquids?

A. Alcohol has a lower boiling point than water, so it will vaporize at a lower temperature. When you distill a fermented liquid, you heat it up to a temperature between the boiling points of water and alcohol, so that the resulting vapor has a higher alcohol content than in the original fermented liquid. You then have some kind of apparatus above the liquid to condense the vapor and collect it. The condensed liquid will have a higher alcohol content than the original liquid.
