Iron supplements are supplements that can be prescribed by a doctor for a medical reason. Iron can also be a dietary supplement, which can be purchased in supermarkets etc. These 2 categories should not be confused.

The first iron pills were commonly known as Blaud's pills, which were named after P. Blaud of Beaucaire, the French physician who introduced and started the use of these medications as a treatment for patients with anemia.

Indications

Iron supplements are used in medicine to treat iron-deficiency anemia.

First, it must be clear that iron deficiency and not another factor (e.g. chronic, low-grade, undetected blood loss such as fecal occult blood) causes the anemia. Preventive measures must be discussed with the patient (for example when the patient is on a strict vegetarian diet because inorganic iron in plants has a lower bioavailability, or elderly patients with a poor diet).

Another indication for giving extra iron is the second and third trimester of pregnancy, generally in association with folic acid. Indeed, in some condition like growth, menstruation and pregnancy, the body's need for iron is increased. Supplements may be needed to reach RDA life goals.

Iron supplements during pregnancy - Beneficial or detrimental?
Q. I have to write a critique about whether or not iron supplements are beneficial during pregnancy as your body naturally hides or stores the iron in the liver so that bacteria can t use it if you get an infection. Does anyone have any websites I can go to to find information I can use for my argument and also information saying the opposite, that you need iron supplements during pregnancy? I also need information on the use of paracetamol to relieve a fever as a fever supposedly helps you fight an infection. Also I need information on the benefits and detriments of chronic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis and whether the risk to the child is worth it. Any good websites would be great as well as an experts opinion if they read it.… [cont.]

A. go to your local library and check out the book "What to Expect When Expecting"...it's a great source for questions like these...I don't know of any websites but you may try a Google search for pregnancy websites and see what it pulls up...just remember to be careful of things on the internet, you need something by a pro, maybe webmd? and other sites like it. Iron is usually good in pregnancy IF you are anemic or border-line anemic...if you have normal iron levels you could get too much and get sick(not to mention constipated)!

Is there any interaction between birthcontrol pills and iron supplements?
Q. im on Diannet combined contracepitive pill and i want to take Fefol an iron supplement.any interaction?? or less effectiveness of my birthcontrol pill?

A. Your best (and safest) bet would be to ask a pharmacist if there are any interactions listed between the drugs and supplements you're taking. Doctors and pharmacists both have access to a database of drug and supplement interactions and they can tell you quickly if you can safely take them together or not... anyone here will just have a best guess from searching on the internet (which isn't always accurate, as we all know) ;-) That being said, I don't see any reason there would be a problem... there is Iron in many meats and leafy green veggies, which aren't restricted against with the pill. Good luck!

Is it ok to take my prenatal vitamins and iron supplements at the same time?
Q. I was told to take a iron supplement because Im borderline enemic...but I was wondering if its ok to take them both at the same time, only because of the double iron. I didnt know if it would be too much iron at one time...I have a appointment tomorrow with my midwife and I will ask her, Im just wondering in the meantime. Also I havent had any trouble with constipation yet...thank god! thanks

A. Yup, it's okay, but be sure you take calcium at a different time then, as iron will interfere with calcium's absorbtion. If you choose to take iron at a different time, take it with orange juice or something else with vitamin C, to assist with absorbing it. Ask about a time-release iron like slow-FE. Will increase absorbtion as well as reduce side effects like constipation and upset stomach.
