Dietary minerals are the chemical elements required by living organisms, other than the four elements carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen present in common organic molecules. The term "mineral" is archaic, since the intent of the definition is to describe ions (atoms), not chemical compounds or actual minerals.

Dietitians may recommend that dietary minerals are best supplied by ingesting specific foods rich with the element(s) of interest. Sometimes dietary minerals are ingested as part of dietary supplements, the most common being iodine in iodized salt.

The dietary focus on dietary minerals derives from an interest in supporting biochemical reactions with the required elemental components. Appropriate intake levels of certain chemical elements are thus required to maintain optimal health. According to nutritional experts, the requirements are met simply with a conventional balanced diet.

who decides what (a drink for example) is classified as a dietary supplement - FDA or the manufacturer?
Q. Thinking of developing a healthy beverage with lots and lots of good stuff - vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, anthocyanins, amino acids, etc. Want to know how the FDA - if at all - decides which drink is a 'Supplement' under DSHEA and which is a food.

Effect of dietary Potassium on Lithium Carbonate uptake.?
Q. I take Lithium. I know I need to avoid easting too much Sodium to avoid preventing the Lithium from being absorbed. A basic knowledge of chemistry would suggest that too much Potassium would have the same effect. Should I avoid Potassium heavy foods? Obviously I need to avoid any quantity of Rubidium, Cesium or Francium taken internally to prevent spontaneous human detonation, but Potassium is an important mineral.

A. Actually John, I was under the impression that you were supposed to have a normal diet while on Lithium, and not decrease or increase your salt intake. In fact Lithium toxicity is compounded by Sodium depletion. So the same would be said for Potassium and other salts.
