From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A dietary supplement, also known as food supplement or nutritional supplement, is a preparation intended to provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids or amino acids, that are missing or are not consumed in sufficient quantity in a person's diet. Some countries define dietary supplements as foods, while in others they are defined as drugs. Supplements containing vitamins or dietary minerals are included as a category of food in the Codex Alimentarius, a collection of internationally recognized standards, codes of practice, guidelines and other recommendations relating to foods, food production and food safety. These texts are drawn up by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, an organization that is sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Q. I'm currently on the pill, and I was planning on taking a dietary supplement to clean toxins out of my body. The supplement basically flushes my system and makes me pee and poo a lot. Would that affect my pill, though, since i'm flushing toxins out of my body? Asked by o0o0o0o0o0o - Mon Feb 25 19:34:55 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Anything that increases intestinal motility (i.e., flushes out your system) can decrease your body's absorption of birth control pills. If you still want to cleanse yourself via this method, keep taking your birth control pills but use another method of contraception until you're through cleansing and you've had a menstrual period. Answered by july - Mon Feb 25 20:01:15 2008 Would it hurt to take more than one dietary supplement? Q. I am taking some Acai dietary supplements with Hoodia. But I want to drink my dietary supplement tea as well. Does it hurt to take more than one? Especially if they are all natural? And yes, I am eating healthy and exercising. I just don't want to hurt myself if its not good to do that. Thanks! Asked by Just Curious - Mon Jan 12 22:56:38 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. In that respect the effective dose of vitamins is actually very high. There are very few that will react badly with each other. One might be Ginko Biloba in high doses while on pharmaceutical blood thinners and aspirin. Or 5HTP while on pharmaceutical anti-depressants but aside from a few rare cases they are relatively harmless even in massive doses. With regards to diet supplements you can generally dose up until you find its effect or you are uncomfortably jittery then cut or spread out your dose to an acceptable medium. If you take with a meal the dose would be larger than one taken… [cont.] Answered by RobinBKK - Tue Jan 13 21:19:59 2009 Consumption of dietary supplement works best when taken how; with food or as a meal replacement?
